YOUR MALDIVES HOLIDAYS MAY BE MORE EXPENSIVE SOON

Maldives Green Tax

Tourism Minister of Maldives announced that the government plans to introduce Green Tax in 2015 around November last year. No amount was confirmed, as it will be discussed with the industry partners before implementing the new tax.

Only tourist will pay Green Tax.

GST is increased to 12% from 8% since November 2014. If Green Tax gets introduced, tourist will have to pay 12% GST and additional Green Tax. The aim of introducing this new tax is unclear.

The government may be using this fund to plant trees to offset carbon as it could be of immense benefit for both the environment and tourism in the future. Replacing useless bushes with palm trees or other useful plants will also help the locals with economic return by selling coconut, flowers and etc.

The Green Tax funds could also be utilised for protection of reefs. Fishermen throwing their anchor at the reef have a devastating effect over the generation. Permanent anchor lines need to be placed at every island and at different points so fishermen would not need to throw their anchor.
