Mother Nature has produced some of her finest work in Western Australia, creating diverse and dramatic landscapes like no others on Earth. Landscapes like Karijini National Park, home to some of the oldest rock formations dating back two billion years, and Ningaloo Reef, the world's largest fringing reef.
#1 Penguin Island
Located 45 minutes south of Perth and a five minute ferry ride across Shoalwater Bay, Penguin Island is one of Australia's premier nature based tourism destinations. The star attraction is the little penguin - the smallest species in the world. Visitors can get up close to the penguins at the Discovery Centre where rangers host three daily penguin feedings (costs may apply). This is your best opportunity to see these creatures as they're shy and spend most daylight hours feeding at sea or hidden in their burrows.
#2 Cottesloe Beach
Perth's iconic Cottesloe Beach is as pretty as a picture. It's one of the city's most popular spots for swimming, snorkelling, surfing and drinking in ocean sunsets over a glass of wine, a refreshing beer or a relaxed dinner.
#3 Karijini National Park
Two billion years in the making, Karijini National Park is one of Western Australia's most spectacular natural attractions offering amazing hiking trails through ancient gorges. With massive gorges, crystal clear rock pools and waterfalls, Karijini National Park is a must for anyone with a thirst for adventure.
#4 Lucky Bay
Australia's whitest beach, Lucky Bay, is also one of Western Australia's most idyllic; the biggest jewel in a string of stunning beaches along the coast of Cape Le Grand National Park and Esperance. Its squeaky-clean sand, turquoise water, perfect swimming conditions and breathtaking views of the Recherche Archipelago regularly put it at the top of Australia's best beach list. Even the kangaroos can't resist lazing on the sand here.
#5 Greenspool
One of Mother Nature's most inviting swimming pools, Greens Pool is among Western Australia's most iconic beaches. A picture postcard of clear emerald waters, pure white sand and sculpted rocks that shelter the bay from the swell beyond, it's a top spot for swimming, snorkelling and diving.
#6 Pinnacles
The lunar-like Pinnacles form one of Australia's most unique and fascinating natural landscapes. Formed over millions of years, thousands of tall limestone spires rise eerily out of the yellow desert sands of Nambung National Park, just outside the coastal town of Cervantes.
#7 Purnululu (Bungle-Bungle) National Park
Earning a place on the National and World Heritage lists, Purnululu National Park is home to the Bungle Bungle Range of Western Australia's Kimberley region. 350 million years in the making, it's the most unique and captivating range on Earth.
#8 Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk
The Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk gives you a bird's eye view of some of the tallest timber giants on Earth - Western Australia's majestic tingle trees. Climbing 40 metres into the forest canopy and meandering through the treetops for 600 metres, the walk trail is the first of its kind, designed to maximise views and minimise impact.
#9 Lancelin Sand Dunes
For a taste of adventure and an injection of adrenalin, head to the Lancelin sand dunes north of Perth. Here, you can go sand boarding down massive 45 degree angle dunes, which are the biggest in Western Australia.
#10 Shoal Water Island Marine Park
Pristine Islands, reefs and ship wrecks make for excellent diving, snorkelling and wildlife watching in the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. At Penguin Island, Little Penguins breed in the burrows - watch them being fed at the interactive centre. The island is also home to breeding colonies of silver gulls, fairy terns, bridled terns and Caspian terns.
