5 Things To Do When In Argentina!

#1 Touch the End of the Earth

Ushuaia is Tierra del Fuego’s beloved capital: a bustling port and center for worldwide explorers. As the world’s southernmost settlement, nicknamed the “End of the World.” The windswept town, perched on a steep hill, is surrounded by the Martial Mountains and the Beagle Channel. It's the gateway to Antarctica cruises and tours to nearby Isla Yécapasela, known as “Penguin Island” for its penguin colonies.

Ushuaia gives way to Argentina’s most exciting attractions, promising to spark eyes open and get hearts pumping wildly. This essential access point leads swiftly into Glacier Martial and Cerro Castor for premier skiing; to the Beagle Channel where orcas, penguins, and other wildlife abound; and to astounding Tierra del Fuego National Park, Argentina’s foremost coastal park filled with easy-to-navigate trails along rivers and bays, leading through thick evergreen forests, and radiant vermillion hillsides in autumn.

The Maritime and Prison Museums, housed in a former jail, chronicle Ushuaia’s history. The Museo del Fin del Mundo displays tools by indigenous tribes such as the Yámana and screens nature and history films. The Southern Fuegian steam-engine railway or “End of the World Train,” originally built by convicts in the early 1900s, runs from west of Ushuaia to the park.

#2 Listen to Deafening Iguazu Falls

There are some pretty spectacular waterfalls around the world—then there’s other-worldly Iguazu Falls, a natural wonder resonating in the memories of those lucky enough to experience its resounding flow and incredible power. A visit is a jaw-dropping, visceral experience, and the power and noise of the cascades live forever in the memory. An added benefit is the setting: the falls lie split between Brazil and Argentina in a large expanse of national park and rainforest. The falls are easily reached from either side of the Argentine–Brazilian border, as well as from nearby Paraguay. Most visitors choose either to stay in Foz do Iguacu, on the Brazilian side, or in Argentina’s Puerto Iguazu.

#3 See the Glacier Perito Moreno

Among the Earth’s most dynamic and accessible ice fields, Glacier Perito Moreno is the stunning centrepiece of the southern sector of Los Glaciares National Park. Locally referred to as Glacier Moreno, it measures 30km long, 5km wide and 60m high, but what makes it exceptional in the world of ice is its constant advance – up to 2m per day, causing building-sized icebergs to calve from its face. In some ways, watching the glacier is a very sedentary park experience, but it manages to nonetheless be thrilling.
Some tips: Just bring your lunch box, a bottle of champagne/wine, and chill it in the lake with this stunning view!

#4 Paying Respects to Envita

Every city has its heroes that leave an eternal mark on the place. However, few cities are as enchanted as Buenos Aires is with Maria Eva Duarte de Peron. Eva Peron was first lady to the president of Argentina, Juan Peron. Evita, as she was known by her hordes of devoted fans, was a saint-like defender of the poor. She was instrumental in Argentinean suffrage before her untimely death to cancer at the age of 33. She has been immortalized around the world in the 1978 musical Evita by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. In Buenos Aires, however, the sites contributed to the city by Eva Peron are preserved diligently so that subsequent generations never forget her contribution.

#5 Discover The 14 Coloured Mountain

The 14 Coloured Mountain, known locally as ‘Hornacal’, in northwestern Argentina is just one of those places. Located near the famous Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the 14 Colour Mountain or the Rainbow mountain is one of the area’s most beautiful and yet – surprisingly – un-touristy sites. The 14 Colour Mountain is the result of fascinating geological processes but is effectively a simple outcropping of rocks from different time periods. The sheer variety of colors on display here result due to the accumulation of different sediments from when this region was underwater 600 million years ago – hard to believe now that its stuck on top of the Andes. In fact it’s so high (height 4,100 meters above seal-level) that you are likely to experience altitude sickness here so take your time and relax, there is no rush. Just bask in the view that you are unlikely to forget in this lifetime.
