APPLE PICKING IN AOMORI 2017

Aomori, the northernmost prefecture on the mainland of Japan is famous for its apple orchards. Apple is known as an icon of Aomori prefecture and are grown with proper care and nurture. Aomori’s apple picking season begins from August to Mid-November. During this season, most of the private fruit picking farms welcome visitors to pick apples. The apples can be eaten fresh right after picking them from the farms. Hirosaki City Apple Park is located approximately 15 minutes from JR Hirosaki Station by car or 20 minutes from Owani to Hirosaki IC via Tohoku Expressway by car. Other apple picking farms in Aomori also includes the Aomori Tourist Apple Orchard, Mori no Naka no Kajuen (Orchard), Mt. Iwaki Tourist Apple Orchard and Itayanagi Furusato Center.

Hirosaki Park is the home to over 1300 apples trees with 65 different varieties. Visitors can tour and have hands-on experience of the steps involved in apple production. At the production experience garden, participants can sort and bag the apples, prune the leaves, as well as freely explore the garden. The Ringo no Ie (Apple House) has a large assortment of over 1250 apple products from sweets to crafts. The café’s menu includes apple curry, pork tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet), and apple soft served ice cream. There’s even more to see – an old farm house with old farming equipment, a play area, and a picnic area.

During the winter, visitors can also experience kanjiki (wooden footwear made for walking on the snow) and sledding, special experiences that only be had in the snow country.
