MUST-DO AQUATIC ADVENTURES IN AUSTRALIA

Must-do Aquatic Adventures in Australia

The appeal of an island destination is to take part in all the water-based activities like swimming, surfing, and snorkelling. Whether you’re an underwater expert, thrill-seeker or keen learner, there is something for everyone along Australia’s coastal shores – easily accessible from its major cities, so it won't take you long getting to the water! With so many activities to choose from, here are some of the best places to make a splash when in Oz.

#1 Scuba Diving at the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland

You can’t talk about scuba diving in Australia without mentioning the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. Situated in a marine park about the size of Malaysia, the largest coral reef ecosystem in the world extends some 2,300 kilometres in length in the north-eastern coast of Australia. It is made up of about 3,000 coral reefs, which provide its stunning kaleidoscope of colours, and around 600 islands. For the underwater adventurer, it is a diving paradise, home to an astounding assortment of marine life including many species of turtles, fish, marine mammals and molluscs.

Cairns provides the best entry point to the reef as there are  regular flights from Kuala Lumpur via Singapore. You can choose to stay in any of the hotels in the city or along the coastline. There is also the option of staying at one of the island resorts at the reef. From any of those places, jump onto one of the many boats that depart for day excursions. They will usually stop at a number of sites where you can take a plunge into the ocean.

Want to dedicate more time to diving? Then hop on a liveaboard boat, spending anywhere from two to seven days out at sea, depending on the tour operator. Not only will this give you more time to spend underwater, but you can also try it at night for another amazing experience altogether Another plus is that you'll have access to the outer reef, where it is less busy. You can dive anytime of the year at the Great Barrier Reef but the ideal time to explore its depths is from late August to early December.

#2 Jetskiing in Rockingham, Western Australia

If it's a high octane experience you're seeking, why not try jetskiing? A good place to give this a go is in Rockingham, a marine activity hotspot located just 45 minutes south of Perth. A tour guide will take you on a thrill ride through the area's gorgeous surroundings, including Garden Island.

Oh, and how's this for fun? You may just chance upon sea lions, penguins, and dolphins while you are zipping through the waves. In fact, there is a jet ski eco-tour that moves at a milder pace to allow for better opportunities to view marine wildlife.

For those who prefer a greater adrenaline rush, the blast tour should be more your speed. On this tour, you can try out some more advanced manoeuvres.

#3 Surfing Lessons in Sydney, New South Wales

If you have always wanted to give surfing a try, you are in luck because there are many surfing schools in Australia. After all, it is the country where the first world-surfing championship was held back in 1964 at Manly Beach in Sydney. Now, you can learn to catch a wave at the very same beach.

To get to Manly Beach, board a ferry at Circular Quay, near the Sydney Opera House, for the 30-minute journey. Soak up the stunning views of Sydney Harbour and dream of the surfing adventure that awaits. When you arrive, walk along the Corso, a pedestrian shopping boulevard that will take you straight to the beach.

Classes are available for all level of learners from beginner to intermediate and advance. You can even sign up for private lessons if you think you need personal attention. Otherwise, group classes could be a fun way to meet new people and make friends.
