Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, offers a myriad of diversions and attractions, and serves as an exploration base for the state’s south. To the city’s east are the villages and vineyards of the Coal River Valley, and beyond, the convict site of Port Arthur and such formations as the Tessellated Pavement. South of Hobart are the picturesque towns, mountains and forests of the Huon Valley, and close by, Bruny Island and the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. A north west route will follow the pretty River Derwent through New Norfolk to Tasmania’s central highlands, while north east, towards Launceston, takes visitors through heritage towns built nearly 200 years ago.
