Located in an isolated area that is not easily accessible by road, comes one of the most beautiful river in the world that changes colour for a limited time every year.
Caño Cristales looks pretty much like any other river most of the time, with rocks covered in dull green moss. However, for a certain period of time in a year, the river blossoms in a vibrant explosion of colours!

It happens during a short span between the wet and dry seasons, when the water level is just right for a distinctive species of plant called Macarenia Clavigera shows off its brilliant red colour below the cool, clear current. Additionally, it balances with the splotches of yellow and green sand, clear blue water, and a thousand shades in between.
It’s best to see this dazzling array of life in the river between Septembers to Novembers. You can fly into the nearby town of La Macarena and take a short trip into “Serrania de la Macarena,” the national park where Caño Cristales is located.
