With a jaw-dropping 12,000 kilometres of coastline, it’s no wonder Western Australia has more breathtakingly beautiful beaches than any other state or territory in Australia – many with white sand so pristine, it squeaks. To help you take your pick, here’s the top ten.
#1 Cottesloe Beach
Perth's iconic Cottesloe Beach is as pretty as a picture. It's one of the city's most popular spots for swimming, snorkelling, surfing and drinking in ocean sunsets over a glass of wine, a refreshing beer or a relaxed dinner.
#2 Lucky Bay
Australia's whitest beach, Lucky Bay, is also one of Western Australia's most idyllic; the biggest jewel in a string of stunning beaches along the coast of Cape Le Grand National Park and Esperance. Its squeaky-clean sand, turquoise water, perfect swimming conditions and breathtaking views of the Recherche Archipelago regularly put it at the top of Australia's best beach list. Even the kangaroos can't resist lazing on the sand here.
#3 Greens Pool
One of Mother Nature's most inviting swimming pools, Greens Pool is among Western Australia's most iconic beaches. A picture postcard of clear emerald waters, pure white sand and sculpted rocks that shelter the bay from the swell beyond, it's a top spot for swimming, snorkelling and diving.
#4 Rottnest Island
Famous for its laid back atmosphere and beautiful beaches, Rottnest Island lies just 18 kilometres offshore from Perth surrounded by the sparkling Indian Ocean. This is where the locals go to swim, surf, snorkel, fish and relax.
#5 Scarborough Beach
For teens and surfers, Scarborough Beach is a firm favourite. The regular swell, impressive surf breaks and long stretch of white sand attract swimmers, surfers, body-boarders. Scarborough Beach is also popular for kite surfing and wind surfing, especially when the afternoon sea breeze is in.
#6 Ningaloo Reef
The World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef is internationally recognised as one of the planet’s last great ocean paradises. Located in Western Australia's Gascoyne region and fronting the gateway townships of Exmouth and Coral Bay, the 300 kilometre long Ningaloo Reef is the largest fringing coral reef in the world.
#7 Cape Range National Park
Situated on the west side of Exmouth’s North West Cape is the Cape Range National Park; a spectacular landscape of rugged limestone ranges, breathtaking deep canyons and 60 kilometres of pristine beaches.
#8 Monkey Mia
Monkey Mia is one of Western Australia's most famous dolphin watching destinations. This calm bay is world famous for the pod of friendly dolphins that visit the shore most days to be hand fed.
#9 Turquoise Bay
Dive into the pristine waters of the aptly named Turquoise Bay near the town of Exmouth and you're swimming within a few metres of Ningaloo Reef. Known as one of Australia's best beaches, and amongst the top twenty beaches in the world, Turquoise Bay is the perfect spot to spend an afternoon relaxing, swimming and snorkelling.
#10 Sugarloaf Rock
One of the most photographed seascapes in Western Australia, Sugarloaf Rock is in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. This impressive rock formation dominates the coastline near Cape Naturaliste.
