Overpacking is common, especially for those new and eager travellers. However, some still don’t understand the meaning of travel light that will result in misery while travelling for not only you, but also other travellers. Unless you are moving to a new place for a year, I believe you can live without some of these items.

I understand some people can’t sleep without the smell of their own pillow. Still, I hope those people with at least give inflatable neck pillow a try or just use and airplane pillow.

Unless you are never returning home or one with genuine need of a service dog, please leave your pets at home. Animals can become anxious and scared while travelling. They have travel limitations. So please leave your pets in their happy place.
Keep it to casual shoes, dress shoes or sandals. Something plain that is easy to match with most outfits. If really needed for fancy events, you may bring the third pair but that’s it.
Yes, it’s not for you. You are doing it for a friend and you want to be a good friend. Unless your friends are paying for your trip, you always have the choice to gently reject their request for bulky souvenirs. Still want to be a kind soul? At least check them in, so other travellers don’t have to join you in the ordeal while on board.
