DAY 2 - Taiyuan – Yanmen Pass (2H) – Datong (2H)

After enjoying breakfast, proceed to today’s itinerary:

Yanmen Pass (Includes entrance ticket + shuttle bus) – One of the most important ancient passes in Chinese history, known as the “First Mighty Pass of China.” With its steep terrain, it has long been a strategic military stronghold and a key defense point along the Great Wall. The ancient gate and fortress remain imposing, preserving a strong sense of historical grandeur.
Yungang Grottoes (Includes entrance ticket + shuttle bus) – One of China’s three major grotto complexes, renowned for its grand scale and exquisite carvings. Constructed during the Northern Wei dynasty, the site contains 254 caves and tens of thousands of Buddhist statues. Its artistic style blends Central Plains and Western influences, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an outstanding example of ancient Chinese Buddhist art.

DAY 3 - Datong – Hanging Temple (1.5H) – Yingxian Wooden Pagoda (1H) – Mount Wutai (2.5H)

Hanging Temple (Includes entrance ticket + shuttle bus) – An ancient architectural marvel built into the sheer cliffside, standing about 50 meters above the ground. Supported by wooden beams and appearing to “hang in midair,” the temple uniquely integrates Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, making it a rare example of a three-religion complex in China.(Note: The Hanging Temple Scenic Area has visitor limits. Tickets for climbing must be purchased on-site by guests.)
Yingxian Wooden Pagoda (Includes entrance ticket) – Officially named the Sakyamuni Pagoda of Fogong Temple, it is the world’s tallest and oldest all-wooden pagoda. Built during the Liao dynasty over 900 years ago, the structure was constructed without a single iron nail. Its precise and sturdy craftsmanship represents the pinnacle of ancient Chinese wooden architecture.
