Remarks
  • The validity period of a Takayama - Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass is the consecutive 5 days period beginning on the date the PASS is first used.
  • Within three months from the date the Exchange Order was issued, you must turn in your Exchange Order to obtain your Takayama - Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass (for example, an Exchange Order issued on April 15 would have to be turned in by July 14).
  • At that time, you have to specify the date that you want to start using the PASS. It can be any date within one month from the date the PASS is received.
  • Once a starting date has been assigned to the PASS, it cannot be changed.
  • Children who are age 6 through 11 as of the date on which the exchange order is issued are eligible for child PASS prices.
  • The applicable price is the price valid on the date when an Exchange Order is issued.
  • Prices are subject to change without prior notice.
  • The type of PASS describe on the Exchange Order cannot be changed.
  • Once payment done, an exchange order will be given and this will be the actual document to bring during your travel.
  • If the Exchange Order is lost or stolen, or you are unable to provide it for another reason, no exchange for a Takayama - Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass can be made.
  • You will not be able to exchange your Exchange Order for a PASS if you fail to satisfy the eligibility requirements. (Refer Guidelines & Terms)

Purchasing a rail pass

Purchasing Exchange Order through a Travel Agency outside Japan

  • Step 1.Purchase an exchange order (MCO: Miscellaneous Charges Order) at sales locations outside Japan.
    • Once issued, MCO must be exchanged in 3 months.
  • Step 2.After entering in Japan, present the MCO with a passport at exchange locations, fill out an application with necessary details, and exchange for Takayama - Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass.
    • MCOs that could not be exchanged can be refunded at the overseas travel agency where the pass was originally purchased. (*A separate handling fee will be applied.)
    • If you exchange your MCO outside the area in which your pass can be used, you will have to pay the fare for the trip to the area in which your pass will be valid separately. (Your pass will be valid only within the stipulated area)

Availability and Use

Points to note during use

  • Passes can only be used by the persons who have obtained them, and may not be transferred or loaned to anyone else.
  • To begin using your pass at the station, have it stamped by station staff at the ticket gate.
  • If dates change while you are on board, reaching the day following that of the end of the validity period, basic fares will remain valid until you exit the first ticket gate, and additional fees will remain valid until you get off the train you are traveling on the last day of the validity period. 
  • You will not be able to go through automatic ticket gates at the station with your pass. When going through ticket gates, choose manned ones, and show the pass to station staff to let them know about the validity period.
  • Always have your passport with you during your trip, and be ready to present it if requested.
  • Passes may not be extended or refunded due to the suspension of train services, delays or other reasons. Likewise, additional expenses for transportation, accommodation, etc. due to schedule changes will not be refunded. 
  • Re-issuance is not possible. MCOs and passes may not be reissued even if lost, stolen or soiled.

Using JR lines

  • This pass does not allow travel on the Green Car or Gran Class. Be aware that travel on the Green Car or Gran Class will require additional fees. 
  • The pass cannot be used on home liners and other liners. When using trains that require numbered tickets or liner tickets, you will be billed fees for numbered tickets or liner fees. 
  • The pass cannot be used on the Tokaido Shinkansen or sleeper trains. If you wish to ride the Tokaido Shinkansen or sleeper train, you will be separately required to pay basic fare and any additional fees.
  • Refunds of basic fares and fees will not be issued, even if you do not use reserved seating the full four times allowed by the pass.

Buses between Takayama - Kanazawa

 Conditions for use are based on the regulations of JR Central, JR West and their affiliated companies, as well as on the laws of Japan. The Japanese version of the conditions of use will take precedence if any doubts arise over versions in languages other than Japanese. 
The MCO's validity in the period before it is exchanged for a pass will depend on the regulations of the company issuing the MCO.
Any use of the pass that violates its terms and conditions or the JR Group's regulations, terms and conditions may result in invalidation and confiscation of the pass and imposition of a penalty amounting to twice the basic fares and charges for all transportation services for which the pass was used.

How to reserve seats on JR limited express trains

During its valid period, this pass allows you to travel up to four times on reserved seats of ordinary cars of the limited express train between Nagoya - Toyama station (via Tokaido/Takayama lines), and between Kanazawa - Kyoto station - stations within Osaka City area (via Hokuriku/Kosei/Tokaido lines). Please note however, that the pass does not guarantee that you will be able to secure a seat when the desired train is crowded.
(The pass cannot be used for reserved seats on ordinary cars of the "Haruka Airport Express" running between Kyoto Station - Kansai-airport Station and those of the Hokuriku Shinkansen.)
When you wish to use reserved seats, please make sure that before you board you get a reserved seat ticket issued to you (which is free of charge) at a ticket office at a JR Central or JR West train station, or at a branch office of JR Tokai Tours. When using non-reserved seats, this pass by itself is sufficient to be able to use them.

Please note that you cannot be guaranteed a seat on a specific train during crowded periods. 
The periods when seat reservations are particularly difficult to secure are as follows:
Dec. 28 - Jan. 6; Significant congestion is expected during the Year End/New Year holiday periods when people return to their hometown areas or go on vacation.
Apr. 27 - May 6; These consecutive holidays during a popular season for travel cause crowds everywhere.

How to reserve seats on the buses between Takayama - Kanazawa

Takayama - Kanazawa Buses need to be booked in advance. You will be able to board some of the buses between Takayama - Shirakawa-go without booking. Book by yourself or through the store where you purchased your MCO. Inquire with the following bus reservation center to make or change reservations and for information (languages spoken: Japanese and English).

ATTENTION!!

  • Adult: 12 or over 12 years old when an exchange order issued or a rail pass purchased
  • Child: 6-11 years old when an exchange order issued or a rail pass purchased
    • An Adult's or Child's rail pass holder can accompany up to 2 infants (1-5 years old) for free.
    • The infants from the third one will require Child's rail passes for each.
    • Babies aged under 1 year old can be accompanied for free.
    • Child's rail passes will be required for each infant in the following situations:
      • When accompanied infants use Reserved seats by themselves
      • When infants travel by themselves

Eligibility

  • A rail pass user must be holding a passport issued by a foreign government. ※外国での永住権を持っているお客様を含め、日本国籍のお客様は使用できません。
  • A rail pass user must be entering in Japan as a "Temporary Visitor".
    • "Temporary Visitor" is a status of residence defined under Japanese immigration law.

Changes

  • The starting date of the rail pass and the duration cannot be changed after purchasing.

Refunds

  • Refund location: only where a rail pass was issued or exchanged
  • Refund price: the sale price minus a handling fee (10% of the price: Minimum 220 yen per one rail pass)
  • No refund will be given after a rail pass starts to be used or expired
  • No refund will be given due to non-availability of service, delays, or similar issues
  • MCOs that could not be exchanged can be refunded at the overseas travel agency where the pass was originally purchased. (*A separate handling fee will be applied.)
  • Any refund is always subject to 12FLY.COM.MY handling fee and JAPAN RAIL company reserve the right to approve on the refund. 

Related information

  • A rail pass is only valid for its rail pass holder only.
  • A passport must be carried when a rail pass is used and presented when a JR staff asks to.
  • A rail pass will be void if the magnetic ticket is detached from a rail pass book.
  • A rail pass will not be reissued even if lost or stolen.
  • Conditions of use for a rail pass are stipulated by JR-WEST's carriage conditions and laws of Japan.
