Tromsø is ideal for seeing the northern lights and has a modern mix of outdoor activities, a vibrant nightlife, and places to eat local food. Tromsø is located 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle and is the largest city in Northern Norway. The city is also a popular place to observe the majestic phenomenon of the northern lights.

Tromsø is located in the middle of the Northern Lights Oval, which is the area with the highest probability of seeing the lights. This means that there will always be good chances of Northern Lights, regardless of the sun’s cycles. Tromsø is known for its lively nightlife. The Friday and Saturday nights are specially animated. Most of the restaurants, bars and nightclubs are located along the main street, Storgata, making it easy to check out several places in one evening.

The day is at leisure to explore the city of Tromso on your own, and most of this can be done on foor as the main museum are within a short distance of all the centrally located hotels. Depending on your interests, some of the following highlights can be visited during the first day in Tromso.

Evening Snowmobile Safari | 2 person per snowmobile | Departs Daily 5pm at The Scandic Ishavshotel | Returns: 12am
Included: Guided tour, transportation by bus/minubus to Camp Tamok (75 mins), a hot meal (vegetarian option upon request), insulated body suit, boots, gloves, headwear and helmet.

Upon arrival at the wilderness centre of Camp Tamok, we provide you with all the warm clothes and boots necessary. We begin the adventure with a thorough safety introduction and practical demonstration. 
You will be driving in pairs, one driver and one passenger on each snowmobile, with the opportunity to switch places during the trip. We will embark on a tour that will bring you past scenic mountains and through the dramatic snow-covered Finndalen valley, starting at 250 m above sea level and climbing up to 900 m. The distance of the trail is 15 km each way, 30 km in total. You will be on the snowmobile for approx. 2-2.5 hours.
The top point of the trail is the ice-covered Finnvatnet lake, where you can relax and admire the scenery of Finndalen. If time and weather permit, you can try out ice fishing on this lake. At the end of the trip, you will be served a hot meal and coffee by the open fire in a cosy dining lavvu (Sami tent). This trips will give you a chance to see the Northern Lights.

You will transfer to Aurora Camp, where our professional guides will host you for the evening. Here, 25 minutes away from Tromsø and the city lights, the sky is dark and well suited for Aurora watching.
Relax outside by the camp fire in and keep warm in the Arctic as we wait for the Northern Lights to dance across the sky.
During the visit we provide a warm meal of Norwegian Bacalao with locally fished cod prepared with tomato sauce (vegetarian meal upon request) served in our traditional roundhouse.

Reindeer Sledding, Reindeer Feeding & Sami Culture | Departs Daily 10am at Radisson Blu Hotel | Returns: 2pm
Included: Transport (25 mins each way), 35mins Reindeer Sledding, Reindeer feeding, warm lunch of bidos (traditional Sami soup) and drinks, Storytelling of Sami Culture, and a jolk performance (traditional Sami folk song)

Pick up in the city centre before you can enjoy a short, seaside drive (around 25 mins from the city) to where the reindeer and sleds are waiting. Join Sami guides for an unforgetable experience of reindeer sledding and Sami culture.
After the sledding you will visit thier camp and have a chance to feed the herd of around 200 reindeer.
You will then be invited inside a gamme (a traditional sami hut) where you will be served warm drinks and a traditional Sami meal will be cooked over the fire (vegetarian option available).
After lunch you will be invited into a lavuu (Sami tent) and gather round the fire to listen to stories about Sami culture and how it is to be a reindeer herder. The Sami guide will also perform a joik (traditional Sami song) for the guests.

This trip is in a small group by minibus (15 guests), making it a more personal experience. Based on our experience of more than 4,000 Northern Lights Safaris and a hit rate of more than 90%, the latest weather forecast, wind direction and a wide network of knowledgeable locals and guides, we take you to the best spots to view the magical Northern Lights.
We use the minibus as our base for shelter and to find thermal winter suits, hot drinks and “lefse”. This is a fascinating way of searching for the Northern Lights and enjoying the beautiful landscape, even in dark of the Arctic Night.
There is a high focus on night-time and Northern Lights photography, so remember to bring your camera. We will give you good advice and help with camera settings and on how to take Aurora photos. After this exciting tour, we promise that you will be a more skilled photographer. A winter or Aurora portrait is included in the price.
