Auckland

There are a couple of experiences you won’t want to miss in central Auckland. Start with the Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter & Underwater World ( Kelly Tarlton’s Admission included ) gets you up close and personal with sharks and penguins.

Auckland Art Gallery, and follow it up with a few of the city's many small galleries. If you've a picnic in mind you can climb Mt Eden, the city's highest volcanic cone with panoramic views from the summit. Newmarket (just a 10 minute drive from the CBD) is a shopper’s paradise with the glitz and glamour of top designer stores overflowing with international and local labels, as well as high street stores and great eateries. And if you’re around on a Saturday, be sure to check out the French Market in the charming inner-city suburb of Parnell.

Downtown Auckland has an impressive array of cafes, restaurants and bars. Enjoy fine dining on the waterfront, relaxed eats around Queen Street, celebrity chefs’ creations on Federal Street, and ethnic cuisine on Elliot Street. The City Works Depot is a foodie hotspot - head here for delicious lunches with a Kiwi twist and New Zealand craft beers. For nightlife head to the Viaduct Harbour, Britomart or Wynyard Quarter; all are within walking distance of Queen Street. Christchurch - Mt Cook (330km) - Queenstown (271km)

The scenic route to Lake Tekapo begins at Rangiora, a rural centre north of Christchurch city. Small towns appear regularly as you travel across the Canterbury Plains through fields and farms.

The settlement of Lake Tekapo is at the southern end of the lake. The opaque turquoise colour of this lake and others in the area is caused by fine, glacier-ground rock particles held in suspension. The Church of the Good Shepherd and the sheepdog statue are great photo opportunities.

The road to Mt Cook takes you through high country tussock to beautiful Lake Pukaki. You’ll hug the edge of the lake for most of the way up the Tasman Valley to Mount Cook Village. The Aoraki Mount Cook National Park includes the highest peak in Australasia (Mt Cook - 3755m).

The road to Twizel hugs the edge of Lake Pukaki. The exquisite opaque turquoise colour of this lake and others in the area is caused by fine, glacier-ground rock particles held in suspension. The easy drive to Omarama takes you through picturesque sheep farming country fringed with mountain ranges. You’ll have the chance to detour to the fascinating Paritea cliffs, which are constantly being exposed by the active Osler fault line.

Your trip to Queenstown begins with the beautiful Lindis Pass – just magic when there’s snow around. The vineyards of the Gibbston area and bungy jumpers at the Kawarau River Bridge are other interesting distractions.

*Add - 2 Days 1 Night Farmstay in Rakaia or Methven or Ashburton - an hour drive from Christchurch, two hours drive to Lake Tekapo*

Queenstown- Milford Sound (307km) - Queenstown

From Queenstown, follow the road to Te Anau as it winds round the gentle curves of Lake Wakatipu. The scenery here is stunning - lakeside vistas are framed by the rugged face of a magnificent mountain range appropriately named The Remarkables. Easy rolling countryside soon leads you to the shores of Lake Te Anau, the biggest of the South Island’s many lakes. Continue your journey drive to Milford Sound, along the lake and into Fiordland National Park. Enter the picturesque Eglinton Valley, a place of ancient alpine forest and gushing waterfalls and one of only a few road-accessible glacier valleys in New Zealand, and take advantage of the photo opportunities on offer along the Milford Road, like the stunning Mirror Lakes, where on a calm day the surrounding mountain ranges are perfectly reflected in the still waters, and Knobs Flat, where glaciers have carved their mark on the terrain.

Travel under the mountains through the Homer Tunnel, a 1.2km passageway drilled into solid rock, then experience The Chasm, a short but impressive walk over footbridges spanning a series of powerful, swirling waterfalls and rapids.

At Milford Sound, board your 1 hour 45 minute Scenic Cruise and set off to explore the region that Rudyard Kipling called the Eighth Wonder of the World. Travel the length of the fiord and out to the Tasman Sea, gliding past glacier-scarred rock walls and waterfalls that tumble through valleys and crash into the sea far below. Lush native forest clings to steep cliffs, while wildlife including seals, penguins and dolphins are regular visitors to the icy waters. Mountain ranges surround the fiord, including Mitre Peak which rises dramatically from the depths to a height of 1,692 metres above sea level.

Take your time disembarking from your boat cruise and exploring the surrounding area. Slowly head back along the same road to Queenstown, making sure you stock up on photos on the way.

Queenstown

A free day to explore Queenstown.

The resort town of Queenstown is sophisticated and fantastically scenic. Its lake and mountain landscape is suited to almost any kind of adventure; but Queenstown is just as well known as a place for indulgence. The area’s history is intertwined with gold. In 1862, two sheep shearers struck it rich at the edge of the Shotover River. The ensuing gold rush town was named Queenstown because '...it was fit for Queen Victoria'.

Adventure activities include bungy jumping, jet boating, horse trekking and river rafting. Indulgent experiences include exceptional food and wine, lake cruises, spa treatments and boutique shopping. Movie buffs will want to visit the Kawarau Gorge, where scenes from The Lord of the Rings were filmed.

The Skyline Queenstown complex offers a whole day’s worth of fun things to do in Queenstown! Located an easy five minute walk from central Queenstown, Skyline Queenstown offers awe-inspiring views of the region and an abundance of entertainment and adventure for the whole family.

Queenstown runs a Winter Festival every year in June, so if you’ve timed your visit well get ready for an explosion of crazy, fun winter activities around town and up the mountains. With a beautiful view of the Remarkables mountain – take a good look because if the snow’s good, this is one of the two ski fields to visit in Queenstown.
