Cusco

Breakfast at the hotel and free & leisure in the morning. The tour begins in Coricancha, also known as 'The Temple of the Sun', which was built by order of Inca Pachacuti and at the arrival of the Spaniards became the basis for the construction of the Santo Domingo Convent. Walk to the Cathedral, the most imposing monument of the Main Square, whose construction was completed in 1654. Afterwards, head to Sacsayhuamán, one of the emblematic buildings of the Incas; an immense fortress built with large stones, whose transfer and assembling is still a mystery. Every June 24, during the winter solstice, the festival of Inti Raymi, in which the sun is worshipped, is recreated. Continue to Qenqo, an archaeological complex of religious use, where agricultural rituals were held. To conclude the tour, visit Puka Pukara, seven kilometres from the city. Puka Pukara, which means 'red fort,' was an architectural complex of supposed military use with multiple environments, plazas, baths, aqueducts, and towers. It is believed that it was used by the Inca entourage while the leader rested in Tambomachay. After the tour, you will transfer back to the hotel for rest for the day.

Cusco - Chinchero - Ollantaytambo - Sacred Valley

Breakfast in hotel, you are picked up from your hotel to visit the town of Chinchero, a traditional Cusco urban centre located at an elevated point with a beautiful view of the valley. The inhabitants of this area preserve the artisan traditions and the inherited knowledge of the Incas and display them in their clothes and customs. In Chinchero there are also archaeological remains and a beautiful seventeenth-century church, one of the first Catholic buildings in Peru (On Sundays, also visit the local market). Then, you are transferred to the Living Museum of Yucay, a centre of Andean handicraft traditions where demonstrations of the elaboration of textile work, adobe, pottery and silverware are carried out in the same way in which they used to in ancient times; an original recreation of Incan traditions. In addition, you may be able to feed the "residents" at this museum. These include llamas, sheep and alpacas! Later, have lunch in Ollantaytambo and enjoy a superior Andean gastronomy experience in Chuncho restaurant, where the true spirit of the Sacred Valley radiates in a cosy atmosphere. Upon arriving in Ollantaytambo, visit its town, inhabited uninterruptedly since Inca times, and climb the iconic fortress, built next to a mountain. Sacred Valley - Machu Picchu - Cusco

Breakfast by hotel. Transfer to Ollanta train station. Your tour to Machu Picchu begins with a train ride to Aguas Calientes in approximately two hours. This town is also known as "Machu Picchu pueblo" and is the last stop before entering the remains of the most important archaeological site in Peru. In Aguas Calientes there is a craft market, restaurants and hotels of different categories for those who prefer to spend the night at the foot of the mountain and climb it early the following morning. Finally, after a short transfer by bus, reach Machu Picchu, a masterpiece of engineering and architecture that served as a sanctuary and retreat for the Inca Pachacuti. Machu Picchu, which means "Old Mountain", and is considered a World Heritage by the UNESCO and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Once in the citadel you may optionally visit the Intipunku (Sun Gate), the Huayna Picchu (subject to space availability) and the Inca Bridge. Return to Aguas Calientes for lunch at Café Inkaterra. Return to Cusco.

Travel Tips to Machu Picchu:

  • Carry the same travel document/passport that you presented to the agency, given that the train tickets and entrance to Machu Picchu will be issued with the same information.
  • In all train services to Machu Picchu, the passenger can carry only hand luggage (backpack, bag or briefcase) weighing no more than 5kg / 11lb on the train to / from Machu Picchu. You will find your luggage at the chosen hotel. Allowed size: 62 linear inches 157cm (height + length + width)
  • Bring bottle of water and a rain jacket, even if it looks like a beautiful sunny day. And speaking of sun, remember that the ozone layer over Peru is compromised. That, combined with the altitude, makes the sun extremely strong here so wear a hat and use plenty of high SPF sunscreen. And keep some one soles coins in your pocket. You’ll need them to access the lone bathroom at the entrance to the site. To use the bathroom or grab food, you’ll have to exit the gates, so bring your passport and hang onto your ticket. You’ll need to show both to re-enter the citadel.
  • If you experience altitude sickness, definitely find yourself some coca leaves. They are very cheap and you can find them anywhere. Chew on them or buy it in tea form. It will calm your stomach and ease your dizziness.
  • The current restrictions on visits to Machu Picchu allow a maximum stay of 4 hours in the citadel accompanied by a guide during the first entry. If the visitor tours an alternate route (Mountain Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu) the passenger will have 3 hours to for this purpose, additional to the 4 hours in the citadel. If the passenger wishes to enter the citadel again during the afternoon shift or the next day, he must acquire previously an additional ticket to enter in the new shift. There is no ticket sale in the archaeological zone.
