ABOUT MONTEVIDEO

Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital, is a major city along Montevideo Bay. It revolves around the Plaza de la Independencia, once home to a Spanish citadel. This plaza leads to Ciudad Vieja (the old town), with art deco buildings, colonial homes and landmarks including the towering Palacio Salvo and neoclassical performance hall Solís Theatre. Mercado del Puerto is an old port market filled with many steakhouses.
Casa Rivera is a historic home in Ciudad Vieja that now exhibits colonial-era art and furnishings. Avenida 18 de Julio, Montevideo’s main commercial thoroughfare, runs from downtown to the 40m-high Obelisk of Montevideo. Along the way are attractions like the Museo del Gaucho, telling the story of Uruguay’s traditional cowboys. Tracing the city’s coastline are popular beaches like Playa de los Pocitos and La Rambla, a park-lined promenade. Leafy Parque Batlle houses the soccer stadium Estadio Centenario, host of the first World Cup in 1930.
