ABOUT DUSHANBE

Dushanbe, on the Varzob River, is the capital of Tajikistan. On the east bank of the river is Rudaki Park, named for the classical poet. A statue of him stands under an ornate mosaic arch. Nearby is a massive Tajik flag, flying from a towering flagpole. The ancient Tajik warrior Ismoili Somoni is commemorated with a statue and gilded arch. Archaeological finds are displayed at the National Museum of Tajikistan

East of Rudaki Park, Gurminj Museum of Musical Instruments has a collection of traditional instruments from around the country, and hosts regular concerts. The National Museum of Antiquities has a large reclining Buddha. Stalls at Shahmansur Market sell colorful spices, fruits and tea. Across the river, on the edge of Komsomol Lake, the grand Navruz Palace is decorated with elaborate mosaics and paintings depicting scenes from ancient legends.
